Duration of the study:

The SHAPES course is 12 weeks long. Depending on when you start the study we may follow up with you after 3 or 6 months to see whether or not any changes are maintained.

Course Content:

The health education program is delivered as a single 60 minute interactive workshop led by the trained health coach followed by a series of three one hour discussion groups for each of the three areas: brain, heart and bones. Topics within the modules include: physical activity, nutrition, social engagement, stress management and coping with a diagnosis of a chronic condition.

What are the possible side effects and/or risks of taking part?

We do not foresee any risks associated with the study.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?

You may benefit by gaining knowledge about common health conditions of later life. The information we get from this study may help spread the program to other seniors’ centres and show the potential benefit of training seniors to serve as health coaches within the community. It will also help improve scientific knowledge.

How will we assess whether or not the program is effective?

  1. Questionnaires

  • During the study you will be asked to answer some questions regarding your health behaviours. These will be be filled out before you start, at the end of the course, and at the 3 and 6 month follow ups if applicable.

  1. Fitbits

  • A Fitbit is a small wrist-band that counts your steps. You will be asked to wear the device for the duration of the study.

  1. Interviews

  • You will have the option to tell us about your experience in detail after you complete the program.
